One and a half months ago, defensive end Jared DeVries had to take off his No. 95 Detroit Lions jersey as the team considered him expendable and released him. But now his value to the team appeared to increase as he is going to be re-signed by the Lions on Monday.
Having spent the entire of his 9-year career with the Lions, DeVries was cut loose in late February before the team was due to pay him the $400,000 roster bonus on the start of the new league year. However, DeVries has not shown any interest in joining a new team for the new season but been expecting to wear back the Lions jersey and continue to be the team’s solid locker room presence.
According latest reports, DeVries is expected to earn $4.7 million in 2010 season with the new contract and that is no increase from his previous contract, but DeVries is still as happy because it’s good enough of the team to ask him back, especially there are still concerns on his tendon injury that was suffered in last summer’s training camp.

Lions QB Stafford hopes for full participation in the offseason program
The Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford is hoping that he could take full part in the team’s offseason program, with the shoulder and knee injuries both being cleared. It seems likely as he has said that he is recovering well.
"Hopefully we’ll hit big again on the draft this year and get some guys that can really step in and play for us early," Stafford said on the team’s website. "I’m excited that we have the same head coach and both coordinators. It (will give) us a chance to grow in the system and hopefully we’ll play some better ball."
Stafford will be in Allen Park this week to check in with the team doctors and believes he will get good feedback. Hopefully his second season will be better than the rookie one that was hampered by the injuries. We can have a good guess on how long the quarterback in No. 9 Lions jersey will keep his starting job.

Lions QB Stafford tried his knee on practice Wednesday
Since sustaining a knee injury in Oct. 4 loss to the Bears at Chicago, the Detroit Lions quarterback Matt Stafford made his first step toward returning to field by taking part in the team’s Wednesday practice.
The knee injury has caused the quarterback to miss Sunday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers and makes his status for this weekend’s game questionable. However, neither the team nor the coach Jim Schwartz wants to rush him to put on back his Lions jersey. And Stafford said he would wait to see how the knee feels after practice.
“It was good to be doing something again,” he said. “The question will be how it reacts tomorrow. I’m not even thinking about playing on Sunday right now — I just want to see how it feels on Thursday.”
Schwartz said Wednesday that the team will not decided on whether to have Stafford play until Sunday. And it is the same with wide receiver Calvin Johnson, who missed Wednesday practice with knee injury.

Lions found replacer of injured DeVries
Soon after they lost Jared DeVries for injured tendon, the Detroit Lions signed veteran defensive lineman Shaun Smith with a $1 million, one-year deal Monday to bolster their injury-depleted defensive line.
DeVries started 29 games the past three seasons while playing for the Lions. He had to undergo surgery after he ruptured his Achilles' tendon, so it becomes impossible for him to play for the team this season.
Smith was released by the Cleveland Browns Saturday suddenly and the reason was said to be talking freely and involved in a weight-room fight with quarterback Brady Quinn. He was signed by the Browns in 2007 with a four-year deal worth $8.6 million after playing three seasons with Cincinnati. While playing for the Browns, Smith started totally 20 games in two seasons.

Lions WR Johnson will have breakout year
Known as Megatron by Detroit Lions fans, Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson was one of the very few bright spots during the Lions’ 0-16 season a year ago. This year he is most likely to make a breakout year among Lions players.
Last season, the 6-foot-5 Johnson started all 16 games and finished with 78 catches for 1,331 yards and 12 touchdowns, matching Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald for the most scoring catches in the league and becoming second in yards per catch (17.1). He was also chose as a Pro Bowl alternate. During his first three season, he had already piled up 126 catches and 2,087 yards.
Johnson is also praised by coaches and teammates for his humility and talent. He said that he did not set numbers for himself and just wanted to better in every category than he did before. He is belived by many people to be the next superstar of the Lions.
